User Guide: Fossil Fuels Expense Tool
Overview
The Fossil Fuels Expense Tool is a web-based calculator that helps you track and calculate expenses across various categories related to fossil fuel operations (coal, oil, and gas). The tool automatically calculates subtotals for each category and provides a net total of all expenses.
Getting Started
- Open the tool in your web browser
- Begin entering expense amounts in USD for each relevant category
- All calculations happen automatically as you type
- Use the toolbar buttons to save, reset, export, or print your data
Main Features
1. Expense Categories
The tool organizes expenses into nine main categories:
- Exploration & Extraction Costs
- Production & Processing Costs
- Transportation & Distribution
- Equipment & Infrastructure
- Energy & Utilities
- Labor & Human Resources
- Regulatory & Environmental Compliance
- Marketing & Sales
- Financial & Administrative
2. Input Fields
- Click on any amount field to enter values
- The tool accepts numbers with decimal points (e.g., 1250.75)
- Values are automatically formatted with thousands separators when you move to another field
- All fields start with a default value of 0.00
3. Automatic Calculations
- Each category automatically calculates a subtotal
- The net total of all expenses appears at the bottom of the form
- Calculations update in real-time as you enter or modify values
4. Toolbar Functions
Save Button
- Saves all current values to your browser's local storage
- Your data will persist even if you close the browser
- The button briefly changes to "Saved" to confirm successful storage
Reset Button
- Clears all entered values and resets them to 0.00
- Asks for confirmation before resetting
- Also clears any previously saved data from local storage
Export CSV Button
- Exports all expense data to a CSV (Comma-Separated Values) file
- The file includes category names, item descriptions, and amounts
- Useful for importing into spreadsheet applications like Excel
Print Button
- Opens your browser's print dialog
- Formats the page for printing, hiding the toolbar and unnecessary elements
- Creates a clean, professional document of your expense report
Tips for Use
- Regular Saving: Click "Save" periodically to prevent data loss
- Print Preview: Use your browser's print preview to see how the document will look before printing
- Data Entry: You can enter numbers with or without commas (e.g., 1000000 or 1,000,000 both work)
- Mobile Use: The tool is responsive and works on mobile devices, though a larger screen may be easier for data entry
Technical Notes
- Data is stored locally in your browser (localStorage)
- No data is sent to any server - all processing happens on your device
- The tool works offline once loaded
- For best results, use a modern browser (Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Edge)
Troubleshooting
- If calculations seem incorrect, check that all values are entered properly
- If the tool doesn't remember your data, ensure your browser allows localStorage
- For printing issues, use the print preview to adjust margins or layout
